Joining forces with Mölnlycke to boost pharmacists’ knowledge on wound care

What’s the difference in treating burns and surgical wounds? How often should the bandage be replaced? Together with a medical solutions company Mölnlycke, we are providing wound care training for pharmacists in Finland to ensure they have the answers for their customers.

Mölnlycke is a premium brand in wound care with specialised products. For the best possible treatment outcome and value for the product, it is important that pharmacists can offer their customer the right product. Oriola is providing Mölnlycke’s wound care products to pharmacies exclusively in Finland, and for years our collaboration has extended from product offering to training pharmacists on wound care, which is not a widely covered area in their education.

“We have seen that there is a huge need for wound care training in pharmacies, and the partnership model has worked well in organising this. With the training we can reach many people at the same time, which makes our training sessions an efficient way to offer pharmacists an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of both wound care and our products,” says Riina Partanen, Sales Manager for Wound Care in Finland and Sweden at Mölnlycke.

Over the years the training concepts have varied from live webinars and physical events to videos. According to feedback, the training is much appreciated. In 2023 we have held two live training sessions involving in all around 100 participants, and who gave the training an average grade of 4.2 out of 5.

“Next spring, we are planning to continue the live training in three cities, Tampere, Kuopio and Oulu. The current training concept is built around different wound profiles, such as leg ulcers, surgical and open wounds and burns. The content of the training is developed together with Mölnlycke, and trainers are selected experts such as authorised wound care nurses and plastic surgeons,” says Sari Torniainen, Category Manager at Oriola.

Shared sustainability ambitions

Most of Mölnlycke’s wound care products sold in the Nordics come from a manufacturing plant in Mikkeli, a town in southeast Finland. The plant, which is currently being expanded, serves global markets and employs more than 600 people, making Mölnlycke a significant employer in the area. Minimising operational environmental impact has been a focus area for the company. Today, the plant is for example using 100% renewable energy and 95% of raw materials are from EU countries.

“As we are providing healthcare products, we are naturally very proud of domestic manufacturing that is also important for society. For us, it is also important that our partners share high sustainability ambitions and commit to ethical business practices. Our long-term collaboration with Oriola has proved that we have the same high standards, backed up with the fact that we both received a gold medal in the EcoVadis sustainability rating 2023,” notes Riina Partanen.

Our training event in Turku in autumn 2023 attracted a crowd of pharmacists ready to learn more about wound care.
